Chris Lovie-Tyler
A middle-aged Kiwi guy chasing the intangible with a paint brush. I send out a short, weekly email about it.
[3/9/25] Sorry, there's a problem with this form at the moment. I'm working on getting it fixed. Come back in a day or two, and you should be able to subscribe.
About
In 2019, at 46, I started drawing and painting. Before that, I’d considered myself a words guy and didn’t think I could draw to save myself. Turns out you can learn.
I've come a long way since then, but I still feel like I'm in the early stages of my artistic development. I'm also exploring what it means to be an artist and a Christian. (I've been a Christian since my teens.)
Every Monday, I send out a short email to anyone who's interested in following my progress. I'll share new drawings and paintings, thoughts on art and faith, and (hopefully) interesting quotes and links.
If you'd like to receive that email, subscribe here.
No archive?
Most email newsletters these days, particularly on Substack, seem like blogs masquerading as newsletters to me. That's partly why I've decided not to have an online archive or RSS feed. But also:
I like that there's some mystery to what I'm sending out, and that only subscribers get to see it.
I'm still figuring out who I am as an artist, so semi-privacy and a little bit of obscurity are probably a good thing.
The internet is a bit ugly at the moment. With AI scraping everything in sight and trolls waiting to pounce, I'd rather fly under the radar.
I don't mind growing an audience slowly. I'd rather have a small handful of genuinely interested subscribers than a whole lot of people who never open my emails.
So, go on, take a chance and subscribe! You can always easily unsubscribe.
And so you know this site is still active, I delivered my latest newsletter, "Shorter and weekly", on 1 August 2025. (The first weekly one will be out on 1 September.)
